I don't understand the story line for amnesia: the dark descent?

Its mysterious. Daniel is going crazy due to this place, and he has amnesia. The shadow I think is supposed to represent Daniel's insanity tearing him apart, and Alexander, well, we just know that he is a horrible old man, who is perhaps the cause of Daniel's insanity. I have only played the demo, but this is what I think of the story.
