You are required to be paid for all your time on an hourly wage. If you are not on the clock, you don't have to do anything unless company policy (which you must have read and signed to) states otherwise. For example, my work requires me to show up 10 minutes before my shift for a briefing and gives some time to issue a fire arm. I don't get paid for this, but it was stated in my work duties and i signed to it, agreeing to it.
