Question about pump shotguns?

will it damage a pump shotgun to load a shell that was already been shot into the chamber,slide the pump forward,and then pull the trigger? i don't want to leave it c0cked and i don't want to pull the trigger on an open chamber,but will the already shot shell provide another protection instead of dry firing??
